About

gnome.jpg Here at Summer House Design we carry an eclectic mix of the new, the unusual, the old and the interesting in home and personal accessories. We want our mix of products to engage our customer's curiosity, creativity, and sense of humor. We are trying to create an experience for each customer. It’s the way our unexpected groups of products play off each other that makes us unique; the vintage juxtaposed with the new; putting a set of Danish mid-century mugs next to locally roasted Sunrise Coffee; a vintage gnome figurine next to new French glasses with gnomes on them...

doorway-930.jpg Before buying the shop we had a jewelry business called Zirkus, which we ran for 20 years. It was a gift jewelry line that sold all over the USA and we made it all right here in Port Townsend, WA. Over the years we often thought about what kind of store we might create someday. We thought it would be interesting to open a shop like the ones we'd been inspired by while traveling in Europe and then an opportunity presented itself. In 2003 we bought a shop called Summer House, at 930 Water Street in Port Townsend.

business-card.jpg When we bought the shop it offered many shabby chic vintage items and a few new products.  The first thing we did was add more color. I remember ordering these colorful metal buckets to mix up the look of the store. Going forward we found more and more well-designed lines to carry. Taking note of the stores we'd seen in Europe, we decided to put together an eclectic, but carefully edited collection of items. We were able to bring in a real variety of things, and make them all work together. As artists and designers we’ve always seen our shop as a way of showcasing good design, both vintage and new. With that in mind we changed the name in 2006 from Summer House to Summer House Design to better reflect our focus on good design.

new-storefront-with-flags.jpg Launching an extension of Summer House Design on the web has been in our minds for quite awhile. Now we are to a point where we have quite a fan base, and many of those people don't live nearby. We thought it would be a great idea to put a collection of our thoughtfully selected products online. We are excited by the possibilities and hope to add more items that showcase our unique selection as we move forward. Please enjoy the site and feel free to contact us with any questions.

Yours Truly,
